Yes, I’m sorry the suburb isn’t the grand, sweeping swath of uninhabited land that you so desperately crave but would learn to loathe, but saying that the land here is barren and that there’s no wildlife here and that there’s nothing to salvage- that’s a You problem. Nature might be struggling, but against all odds it is at least trying.
something my mum always taught us was to look for the resources we’re entitled to, and use them. public land? know your access rights and responsibilities, go there and exercise them. libraries? go there and talk to librarians and read community notice boards, find out what other people are doing around you, ask questions, use the printers. public records offices? go in there, learn what they hold and what you can access, look at old maps, get your full birth certificate copied, check out the census from your neighbourhood a hundred years ago. are you entitled to social support? find out, take it, use it. does the local art college have facilities open to the public? go in, look around, check out their exhibit on ancient looms or whatever, shop in their campus art supply store. it applies online too, there is so much shit in the world that belongs to the public commons that you can access and use if you just take a minute to wonder what might exist!!!

Oh and if literal grass-touching IS viable, I also advocate for touching invasive grass. Many parks in the US have invasive plant removal volunteer work days. You get some air and some exercise and you can talk to other volunteers if you want or you can just march off into the trees on your own and start wreaking havoc with various hand tools. If you want to do something that is both useful AND destructive, I have found nothing better

Removal of invasive species is one of the best things you can do for the environment. The task can feel overwhelming, you impact may feel small. But each plant you remove stops thousands and thousands of additional invasive seeds from wreaking havoc on our native wildlife.
Also like, transit doesn’t need to make a profit, it creates money by allowing people to move easier. We dump hundreds of billions into the interstates and they have never made a singe cent of money back for us because we know the money created by allowing for the movement of individuals outweighs the money spent
